NACADA election results are in! Julian Ledesma is our new Region 9 Chair! This is great news for Berkeley advising and for NACADA. We are delighted to see Julian assume this important and well deserved leadership role. We look forward to the closer relationship a Berkeley Region 9 Chair will bring with our professional association and for increased opportunities to help shape the NACADA agenda in years to come.

The UC Berkeley Honor Code is a student-driven document – and, for a large research university, a pioneering one – that grew out of discussions between the ASUC, the Graduate Assembly, the Academic Senate and the deans of the College of Letters and Science, which accounts for more than half of Berkeley’s faculty and three in four of its undergrads.

Lorena Valdez is the Program Director for Transfer Student Services. She has dedicated 15 years to  developing courses, mentoring programs, service learning internships, and other projects to help ease the transition for thousands of UC Berkeley transfer students.

Big changes are underway in the College of Letters & Science, which is launching a new advising initiative that aims to transform undergraduate advising; the initiative focuses on ‘early and repeated’ advisor conversations with students,  and closer coordination between College and Departmental advisors.

UC Berkeley sent a contingent of advisors to Salt Lake City from October 6-9 for the annual conference of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA). At the conference,a team of Berkeley advisors received an award for "best in show" at the regional NACADA conference over the summer.

Graduate Division is introducing a new online Academic Progress Report that will become a routine part of academic progress tracking of doctoral students after advancement to  candidacy. This is an interactive tool for students and faculty to record goals and activities annually in order to promote steady progress toward degree completion. The Academic Progress Report is an Academic Senate requirement that applies to all doctoral students and it is also an eligibility requirement to receive the Doctoral Completion Fellowship (DCF).
