The Advancing Practice Certificate offers professional development through workshops, small group discussions, and development of a personal advising philosophy statement. While the certificate is open to any UC Berkeley staff, participation requires supervisor's approval. The certificate also makes an excellent Achieve Together goal.
Participant Goals
- Understand the five advising competencies, identify areas of strength and growth, then integrate learnings into practice
- Learn about advising strategies, resources, and tools
- Develop collaborative relationships among advising and student services colleagues
- Refine your advising philosophy and values
Program Structure
Cohorts begin in January or August, with a 12-month commitment. The monthly expectation is approximately 2 hours, with highly flexible scheduling. Participation includes workshops, group meetings, and completion of both self and workshop assessments. Participants will be placed in small groups for the duration of the program. Specific requirements include:
-
Attend a minimum of five Advancing Practice workshops, one in each of the five Foundations of Practice, and submit a workshop evaluation for each of the five.
-
Engage in four reflective discussions with assigned groups of 5-6 participants
-
Complete three short self-assessments (pre, mid, and post)
-
Develop an Advising Philosophy Statement of 1-2 pages
-
Participate in orientation and closing celebration
