Summer 2020 Workshops

Mindfulness, Well-Being, and Self-Care for our Student Services Community. Link to workshop recording.

Tuesday, May 19, 10-11:30am.

Presenter:  Dacher Keltner, UC Berkeley Professor of Psychology; Director, Berkeley Social Interaction Laboratory; Faculty Director, Greater Good Science Center

Meet UC Berkeley Professor Dacher Keltner, who is the Faculty Director of the Greater Good Science Center and a leading researcher in the field of emotion and well-being. In this time of uncertainty and upheaval, we in the field of student services are being called upon to support students in new ways, while at the same time we are challenged by our own unexpected levels of stress and anxiety. Moreover, people of color and low-income people are being hit hard by the pandemic, throwing into sharp relief racial divisions and income inequality. How does this reality impact our work? In this Advancing Practice session, we will learn together about:

  • Self-compassion, acceptance, awe and reverence, and how these qualities can support our own self-care,

  • Practical ways we can help ourselves build resilience,

  • Our cultural context regarding equity and well-being.

We hope you’ll walk away from this session feeling motivated and empowered for better self-care so you can better support both yourself and your students.

Basic Needs Update: What have we learned from COVID-19? Link to workshop recording.

Monday, June 1, 10-11:00am

Presenters: Kiyoko Thomas, Basic Needs Manager, Ruben Canedo, Basic Needs Committee Chair, and others

During SP20, many students struggled with finding adequate housing and food, health/medical care, and basic technology. Even before COVID-19, many students in our community were in crisis. The pandemic exacerbated their situation and brought additional students into crisis. What have we learned from this semester and how can the campus incorporate these lessons for the future?

Learn how the Basic Needs Center responded to this crisis by launching the COVID-19 Student Relief Circle, a central entry-point portal for students. The effort is a collaboration between the Basic Needs Center, Centers for Educational Equity & Excellence (CE3), Disabled Students’ Program, Financial Aid & Scholarships Office, Graduate Assembly, Graduate Division, Grassroots Mutual Aid Providers, Student Advocate’s Office, and the Student Technology Fund.

This workshop is for staff and instructors and is co-sponsored by the Center for Teaching and Learning, the Academic Innovation Studio, and Advising Matters

If you or someone you know has financial resources or has networks that can give to these efforts, there are two funds available:

  • Basic Needs Center @ tinyurl.com/love4UCBbnc : supports emergency rental assistance/eviction prevention, emergency food awards, and students in basic needs crisis including health/medical.

  • Financial Aid & Scholarships Office @ UCB FASO COVID-19 Student Emergency Fund : supports relocation expenses related to COVID-19, wage loss from off-campus employers, and technology needs.

Updates re Basic Needs efforts and resources.
