Best Practices for the COVID-19 Era: Paperless Advising in Data Science. Link to workshop video(link is external).

Thursday, April 2, 10-11:00am

Workshop Presenters: Director of Advising Laura Imai and Advisor Marjorie Ensor

When the new Data Science major was approved in 2018, an advising team was brought on board to serve a large and diverse student population with no existing advising services in place. At the onset, the Data Science Advising team made a commitment to capitalize on this opportunity by implementing (and in many cases innovating and streamlining established practices) policies and procedures to better serve new majors.

By taking advantage of existing tools in Google Suite, we were able to implement fully online procedures without any technical expertise, software development or membership fees. In this online webinar, we will share some of the lessons learned from setting up a paperless office, and walk through how we use Google Suite to manage the following procedures:

  • an online student declaration process for the major and minor, including double majors and simultaneous degrees

  • an online student petition process for course substitution/exception requests

  • an online drop-in advising queue for students to sign up for same-day advising

Please join us and learn how these tools and procedures might work for you in today's virtual advising environment!  Competency areas: TechnologicalInformational.

Social Change Roles in Times of Crisis, a Virtual Reflection

Tuesday, April 21, 10-11:00am.

Presenters: Staff from the Public Service Center(link is external) and special guest Deepa Iyer from the Center for Social Inclusion(link is external)

Social change occurs within an ecosystem of actors taking on various roles. In times of crisis we may find ourselves taking on familiar roles or being called to step into new ones. This conversation, guided by a model developed by Deepa Iyer, at the Center for Social Inclusion, will provide an opportunity to reflect on where we are with regards to "acting" in this moment, share the various social change roles that typically exist within the larger ecosystem of people working towards justice, equity, and inclusion, and discuss how we might stretch and grow in this moment. Students are welcome to participate in this session. Competency areas: ConceptualRelational and Personal.

To get the most out of this workshop, please fill out this reflection tool in advance: https://buildingmovement.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Reflection-Guide-for-Mapping-Roles-in-A-Social-Change-Ecosystem.pdf(link is external) and review this handout: https://buildingmovement.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Role-In-An-Ecosystem.pdf(link is external)

Please join us for this very special opportunity to hear directly from our CE3 student leaders. Who Are the People In Your Neighborhood? Link to workshop recording(link is external)

Tuesday, May 12, 2-3pm

Our inaugural student services community interview features Heidi Yu, Career Center(link is external), and Tomie Lenear, Student Parent Center(link is external), who will interview each other.

Tomie Lenear is the Program Coordinator for the Student Parent Center, serving our community of students who are also parents, of which he is a class of 2014 alum. Born and raised in Oakland Ca he channeled his childhood challenges towards Bay Area Hip Hop culture and media, before entering Cal. From an on-air personality with several popular media outlets, to independent recording artist (formerly of The Coup) his breakout moment came when he joined controversial political rap record label Guerrilla Funk Recordings, under the stage name T - K.A.S.H. After a sobering 08' economic recession, he reverted back to a life that prioritizes faith, fatherhood, and the value of a college education. Between his current role and his time as an undergraduate, Tomie has been at UC Berkeley for almost a decade.
Heidi Yu is part of the L&S Career Counseling Team at the Career Center, and she is excited to work with L&S students because she remembers being an English Literature major from Barnard who had no clue what to do with her degree. After a winding path of temp jobs, teaching abroad in Korea, getting an MSW degree, and working in nonprofits and higher education, Heidi decided to make the leap to move to the West Coast to grow as a person and professional and feels fortunate to land roles first at Portland State University, then at San Francisco State University, and finally at UC Berkeley.

Join our Berkeley advising and student services community and get know one another better! Each month we will host a duo who will interview each other in an "Inside the Actor's Studio(link is external)" style. The exchange will cover personal background, work, and information about each staff member's unit. It's like a fireside chat or a networking lunch. Without the fire and food, but holding the warmth. This session will be recorded.
