Why Berkeley?
I grew up in the East Bay and attended Cal myself. Coming back to work at Cal as a UMA felt like a homecoming, and forging a career advising undergrads is one of the most gratifying ways I could imagine of giving back to my community.
Over your career, what are some of the things that have helped you move to the next level and to new opportunities?
Actively engaging with the campus community, and pursuing opportunities beyond the normal scope of my position. It’s not always easy or the most convenient, but it’s those kinds of things that help you grow.
What is the best advice a mentor has given you in work, life, or beyond?
Kindness is free.
What motivates you to do your best work?
Knowing that I’ve been able to help someone in earnest.
What’s the weirdest job you’ve ever had?
Hostel Manager in Budapest, Hungary
What is an interesting or little-known fact about you?
My parents owned a Comic Book store when I was born, and my name comes from Robin’s real name, Dick Grayson.
What are you most looking forward to this year?
Our Departmental Commencement Ceremony! Finally being able to see most of my students in person, many for the first time in years, and to congratulate them on their accomplishments.
